The miners certainly had a rough time in 1898, especially in
the winters, but they must have appreciated this beauty. Jack London and Robert Service clearly
did.
Both, of course, made fortunes with stories
about life in the Yukon and Alaska.
Jack London’s cabin in Dawson City is made at least half of
replica logs. The missing originals were
taken to Oakland (with some more modern logs) to make the cabin on display in
Jack London Square. So which cabin is the
real one?
Robert Service, known as the Bard of the Yukon (“The
Cremation of Sam McGee”, etc.), lived just a few doors from London, but I don’t
believe at the same time.
